Analyzing Magnetotellurics with Electromagnetics Simulation

Mount Erebus, one of Earth’s most remote volcanoes, sits covered in snow and ice. These chilly surroundings can be misleading, as Mount Erebus has another claim to fame: It’s the most active volcano in Antarctica. One option for mapping its magma flow is with a technique called magnetotellurics (MT), which measures the electrical resistivity of Earth’s crust. To study and improve MT, engineers can analyze its performance with electromagnetics simulation.

To treat atherosclerosis, a cardiovascular disease in which a buildup of plaque causes an artery to narrow, doctors can insert a tiny wire mesh tube called a stent into the obstructed artery. Expanding the stent opens up the artery and helps restore blood flow. To successfully perform this operation and minimize potential health hazards, stent designs must be thoroughly studied and optimized. To do so, we can perform a nonlinear structural mechanics analysis with the COMSOL Multiphysics® software.
