Keynote Video: Locating Leaks in Pipe Networks with a Simulation App

January 16, 2017

Sebastien Perrier of Echologics discusses a simulation application used to locate leaks in underground pipe networks in his keynote presentation at the COMSOL Conference 2016 Boston.

Keynote Video: Combining First Principles Thinking and Modeling

January 3, 2017

Bernard McGarvey of Eli Lilly and Company discusses the combination of first principles thinking and modeling at the COMSOL Conference 2016 Boston.

Multiphysics Simulation Is More Accessible with the Application Builder

December 13, 2016

Learning how to use computational tools requires training. This is why a large group of stakeholders — one that continues to grow — relies on a small pool of experts to perform simulation analyses. The Application Builder, part of the COMSOL Multiphysics® software, is helping to bridge this gap. Simulation experts can now wrap models in an easy-to-use interface, making multiphysics simulation more accessible to a wider audience. See what our customers have to say about the Application Builder.

Designing a Power Generation Source for Bicycle Safety Lights

November 22, 2016

Today, we invite guest blogger Rune Thygesen of Reelight to discuss designing a power generation source for bicycle safety lights using simulation. At Reelight, we are developing an affordable bicycle safety light that is extremely easy for the end user to install. Along with a stronger and more flexible mounting system, we needed to develop a new power generation platform. Using simulation-based design, we created a power platform that is easy to use and quick to install.

Students Use Simulation to Optimize Hyperloop for Design Competition

November 8, 2016

Today, we invite guest blogger Bauke Kooger of Delft University of Technology to discuss modeling a magnetic suspension system for the Hyperloop. The Hyperloop is a proposed mode of transportation in which a vehicle, or pod, travels at the speed of sound through a low-pressure tube. At this speed, a magnetic suspension offers several advantages over systems such as air bearings or wheels. To test this, Delft’s Hyperloop team modeled their pod’s magnetic suspension in the COMSOL Multiphysics® software.

How to Use Acoustic Topology Optimization in Your Simulation Studies

November 3, 2016

Today, guest blogger René Christensen of GN Hearing discusses the importance of acoustic topology optimization and how to apply it in COMSOL Multiphysics. Topology optimization is a powerful tool that enables engineers to find optimal solutions to problems related to their applications. Here, we’ll take a closer look at topology optimization as it relates to acoustics and how we optimally distribute acoustic media to obtain a desired response. Several examples will further illustrate the potential of this optimization technique.

MIT’s PSFC Designs a Tokamak to Survive Plasma Disruptions

October 17, 2016

Developing a device that generates nuclear fusion would provide a nearly limitless amount of clean energy on Earth. But while work on thermonuclear fusion began in the 1950s, engineers are still trying to make this goal a reality. One approach has been to use magnetic confinement devices known as tokamaks. See why a group of engineers at MIT’s Plasma Science Fusion Center (PSFC) turned to simulation to address a key challenge in tokamak design: instability due to plasma disruptions.

Applying a Hybrid Approach to Fracture Flux Conservation

September 13, 2016

Today, guest blogger and Certified Consultant Ionut Prodan of Boffin Solutions, LLC discusses using a hybrid approach to calculate fracture flux in thin structures. When modeling thin fractures within a 3D porous matrix, you can efficiently describe their pressure field by modeling them as 2D objects via the Fracture Flow interface. Significant fracture flux calculation issues, however, may arise for systems of practical interest, such as hydraulic fractures contained within unconventional reservoirs. See how a hybrid approach overcomes such difficulties.
