AC/DC Intensive Course (2 Days)

Mar 12 - Mar 13, 2020 Zurich 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Back to Events Calendar

If you want to quickly get up to speed on using COMSOL Multiphysics® for low-frequency electromagnetics simulations, this is the course for you. During the 2-day COMSOL Multiphysics® AC/DC training course, you will develop a strong foundation for your future electromagnetics and multiphysics modeling work. We start at an introductory level, leading students through the essential steps needed in all analyses (geometry creation, interactive meshing techniques, model setup, coupling physics, postprocessing, etc.) Then, we focus solely on simulations with the AC/DC Module involving electrostatics, electric currents, and magnetic fields for applications in the modeling of resistive and capacitive devices, coils, magnets, motors, electromagnetic actuation, and other areas. The coupling of electromagnetic fields to other physics, such as heat transfer and structural mechanics, will also be covered.

To teach this course, we use a combination of guided hands-on training, theoretical and practical lecture, and self-guided exercises. The goal is to immerse you in all of the main aspects of using COMSOL Multiphysics® and the AC/DC Module, so that you feel comfortable working with the software. You will leave the course feeling confident that you are correctly solving your electromagnetics problems with COMSOL Multiphysics®.

Topics Include

  • Electric current and electrostatic modeling
  • Modeling permanent magnets and linear and nonlinear magnetic materials
  • Modeling coils in 2D and 3D
  • Calculation of force and torque in electromagnetic systems
  • Modeling inductors, transformers, and inductive charging systems
  • Modeling of rotating electrical machinery and linear electromagnetic actuators
  • Coupling the FEA model with a lumped electrical circuit model
  • Stationary, frequency-response, and transient analysis of electromagnetic systems
  • Boundary element methods in electrostatics and magnetostatics
  • Multiphysics modeling: Joule and induction heating

Day 1, 9:00am - 5:00pm

Please plan to check in between 8:30 am - 9:00 am.

The course begins with a guided introduction to the graphical user interface (GUI) of the COMSOL® software through a simple example model, so that you learn the key steps in the modeling workflow. After introducing the software and usage, the course will transition over to focusing solely on electromagnetics modeling. The following topics will be covered:

  • Electrostatic modeling in capacitive media
  • Electric currents modeling in resistive and capacitive media
  • Calculation of capacitance, resistance, and admittance matrices for single- or multiterminal systems
  • Overview of performing resistive and capacitive modeling in COMSOL Multiphysics®
  • Electromagnetic heating

Day 2, 9:00am - 5:00pm

Please plan to check in between 8:30 am - 9:00 am.

The second day builds upon the training from the previous day with a focus on magnetic field modeling. You will learn how to use the appropriate interfaces and boundary conditions to model static and low-frequency magnetic and electric fields. Topics covered include:

  • Modeling permanent magnets and nonlinear magnetic materials
  • Modeling coils, inductors, and transformers
  • Modeling electromagnetic actuators and rotating electrical machines
  • Calculation of electromagnetic losses, modeling of skin, and proximity effects

Techniques to improve the model performance by exploring symmetry, periodic conditions, and various solver choices for electromagnetics modeling will be covered.
