Acoustics Intensive Course (2 Days)

Jun 04 - Jun 05, 2020 Zurich 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Back to Events Calendar

If you want to learn how to use COMSOL Multiphysics® for acoustics and vibrations simulations, this is the course for you. During the 2-day acoustics training course, you will develop a strong foundation for your future acoustics and vibrations modeling work. We start with the essential modeling steps common to all analyses, then focus solely on acoustics simulations, the modeling of pressure waves in fluids and vibrations of solids, as well as how to couple these physics.

To teach this course, we use a combination of instructor- and self-guided hands-on training as well as theoretical and practical lecture. The goal is to immerse you in all of the main aspects of using COMSOL Multiphysics® and the Acoustics Module, so that you feel comfortable working with the COMSOL® software. You will leave the course feeling confident that you are correctly solving your acoustics problems with COMSOL Multiphysics®.

Topics Include

  • Acoustic wave propagation in fluid with or without a background flow
  • Acoustic waves generated by elastic vibrations
  • Acoustic-structure interaction
  • Thermoviscous acoustics in small devices
  • Piezoelectric devices
  • Electroacoustic capabilities
  • Geometrical acoustics
  • Acoustic wave propagation in porous media
  • Acoustic wave propagation in pipe systems
  • Modal, frequency-response, and transient analyses of acoustic systems
  • Perfectly matched layers (PMLs) for optimal modeling of infinite domains
  • Essentials for wave simulation in COMSOL Multiphysics®

Day 1, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Please plan to check in between 8:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.

The course begins with a guided introduction to acoustics modeling in COMSOL Multiphysics® to review the key steps in the modeling workflow with emphasis on essentials for acoustics and vibrations analyses. The same example is extended and further developed to more complexity when additional features are introduced and demoed during the class.

This will be followed by a comprehensive overview of the Acoustics Module. You will learn how to choose the appropriate interfaces to model acoustic phenomena in different types of media including fluid, solid, porous, and piezoelectric devices, as well as pipe systems. We then discuss in detail the features available for pressure acoustics and acoustic-structure interaction simulations. In particular, the following topics will be covered:

  • Meshing considerations for wave problems
  • Perfectly matched layers
  • Far field calculation
  • Solver settings for large acoustics problems
  • Postprocessing for acoustics analyses

Day 2, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Please plan to check in between 8:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.

The second day builds upon the training from the previous day with more advanced topics on the modeling of acoustics and vibrations phenomena in devices of different length scales. We will cover:

  • Thermoviscous acoustics in small devices
  • Aeroacoustics and ultrasound
  • Room acoustics
  • Electroacoustics
  • Piezoelectric transducers
  • Acoustics in porous media and pipe systems
  • The course will be concluded by discussions on best practices for multiphysics modeling for complicated acoustic systems.
