Design Module Updates

For users of the Design Module, COMSOL Multiphysics® version 6.2 introduces new options to improve the ease of use of the Offset Faces and Loft geometry features. Learn more about the updates below.

Option to Subtract the Input After Offsetting Faces

When offsetting faces of a solid geometry object in the normal direction, a Subtract input objects option is now available in the Settings window for the Offset Faces feature. This can be used to create an output object that contains only the volume region that results from the offset in one step. This is useful, for example, when creating a domain for a material deposited on a surface. In previous versions, a similar layer had to be created in two steps: by first offsetting the face and then subtracting the input objects from the result of the offset faces operation.

The domain for a deposited layer in this model of a MEMS resonator is created by applying the new Subtract input objects option in the Offset Faces feature.

Option to Remove Redundant Vertices for Loft

There is a new Remove redundant profile vertices check box in the Loft feature that can automatically recognize and ignore vertices that separate identical curves. This functionality enables a more efficient workflow compared to previous versions, in which partitioning interpolation curves was required before lofting.

Using the new Remove redundant profile vertices check box for the Loft operation, a solid geometry is created in one step from the interpolation curves.

Improved Edge Selection for Cap Faces

The Cap Faces feature now includes a new Group adjacent edges check box in the Settings window. This feature can be enabled to automatically select all edges in a loop when clicking on an edge.

The Cap Faces operation is used to repair the hole and create a solid from the geometry, which was imported from a STEP file. Using the new Group adjacent edges check box, the edges adjacent to the hole are selected with one click.

Updated CAD File Import

The CAD file import functionality has been extended to support the most recent versions of the supported file formats. Additionally, importing the SOLIDWORKS® file format is now available on a supported Linux® operating system with an Intel® 64-bit processor.
